Being Happy

Last weekend, for fall break, me and my twin sister took our 16 year old sons to Universal Studios in Orlando Florida. Me and my son had never been to Universal and we had never been on a vacation with my sister and her son – which is something we had been wanting to do for a long time. The most enjoyable part of the vacation was being together. It certainly wasn’t the rides…. because of my size, I was uncomfortable in most of the seats. We waited in line for nearly 3 hours to ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure only to be turned away (with express passes for our trouble and my embarrassment) because the safety arm wouldn’t close all the way on my seat. We then googled ‘fat friendly rides at Universal Orlando’ so that wouldn’t happen again… My legs and feet were hurting constantly, not being used to carrying around all this weight with no break…. I was miserable.

I am a happy person – an eternal optimist. If I had to put a percentage on it, I would say that I am happy 85% of the time. And even for the 15% left over, I can find something positive in those experiences. I don’t want to have to look for the silver lining to see it….

Today, I downloaded an app called ‘Simple’ – to get my lifestyle under control. I am going to journal my progress here. I can’t promise every day, but I will at least once a week.

That is all for now!! – D

On Getting Older…

Lake Charles

I grew up here… thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of times I have seen the sunset over this lake. Only in the past decade have I truly appreciated the beauty of it. I remember when I was a child my parents and grandparents would make a comment about how beautiful something was whether it be the sky, a flower, or ripples on the water…. and though I saw the same thing they were looking at, I didn’t view it in the same way. Now I do. And it stirs my soul.

Royal Vacation

march242020

Good morning! Enjoying the quiet before the teenagers wake up… planning out our day. Wondering how excited they will be to learn their days filled with xbox and YouTube are over and they now will have a scheduled curriculum which includes P.E.! Even if it is just for one day… or every now and then.

I see coworkers printing out worksheets for their small children and make lesson plans for their learning… their kids are probably going to be smarter at the end of all this than if they were in school for the rest of the year. Then I pan over to myself … realize my kid (who I will call “D”) has been eating noodles in a cup and playing xbox and … swimming in the pool. Of course he still has his normal daily chores and for the most part they are NOT being done, but he has done laundry and washed dishes. Also, he is the 3rd child and the only one I still have at home… I know with every ounce of my being, from previous experience helping with homework, that any type of homeschooling from me would be a traumatic experience that could potentially take years to recover from (I’m talking about my own recovery).

Anyway, since I am home, I might as well risk it and try to teach these 2 kids something… (the 2nd kid is my nephew and the same age as D)… today for physical education they will be learning about Richard Simmons and Sweatin’ to the Oldies… Fun will be had by all (probably the most by me LOL)

p.s. I am calling this our ‘royal vacation’ because all the other terms being used, such as Corona-cation and Quarantine, are being over-used… ‘Corona’ literally means ‘crown’ and the virus is being called Corona because of the way it looks under a microscope… like it is ‘crowned’…. well….who wears a crown? royalty! so, this is our ‘royal vacation’

Spectacular Scrubbies!

I am always thinking of my next project and had to run to Hobby Lobby for supplies. While there, everything I saw gave me ideas… I almost have to walk through there blind-folded, ha ha! I ran across Yarn Bee’s Scrubology Scrub-It yarn…. amazingly ‘squishy’ and mildly ‘scratchy’ at the same time… and I remembered a fantastic pattern I ran across on Ravelry. It is the ‘Scrub It Scrubby’ by Pam Stiff. They are about the same size as the palm of my hand, they are double thickness, they FLOAT!! (yes, indeed) and I have several (one for EVERYTHING!) You can use it for exfoliation in the bath (my favorite), bugs on your car, washing your non-stick and glass cookware, and overall cleaning!  Just click on the link… let me know what you think!!!SCRUBBY

Back at It

Good News, Everyone!!! I have a few weeks left of physical therapy, but I was released by my ortho…. I still can’t lift things over 5 lbs, but I can do normal activity as tolerated! Stay tuned for more updates! Love y’all!

Baby Steps

🙂 I have picked up my hook again. I am restricted to 2 hours a day, but it’s a start and I will take what I can get!

I am trying to decide what direction I want to go with the items I make. Down here in Louisiana, it is only cold enough to wear winter stuff (beanies, scarves, shawls, gloves) about 4 months out of the year. It doesn’t really make sense to me to continue to make things that will be sitting in a box for 8 months.

Anyone have any ideas for me? 🙂

Have a blessed day!

My Little Nook

Hi! I know it has been over a year since I made an entry. For that I am truly sorry, however that is on my list of things to improve.

My little nook has changed a lot.

April 2, 2014 – a week after my chevron blanket post, I drove to Dixie Inn, La. to celebrate my grandmother’s 75th birthday with her. She died a few days later and the biggest, kindest influence on my life was gone. She was the foundation of our family and we will never be the same… I mean, who is the same after experiencing loss? Though I was grieving (and still am) I am rejoicing that she was no longer hurting. she was no longer burdened with a body that grew old while her spirit was still young. She is now in her eternal home, free of pain… strong… and no longer struggling.

There is one less person in my household since October 2014…. my husband. As much as I love him and want him to be with us, he is making destructive decisions that are harmful to himself and to our family and it is not healthy for us to reside in the same house. I pray every day for him and his relationship with God, with our children, and with me. It is hard not having my best friend here with me, unable to call him when I want to tell him something fantastic, missing his help raising our children….

I work full time as a 9-1-1 dispatcher but that wasn’t cutting it, with the financial setbacks courtesy of my best friend, and I was behind in everything. I called a family meeting (me and my kids) to discuss me getting a part time job. This included the hours, extra responsibility for the two teenagers, and the understanding that it was only temporary. With a unanimous vote, I obtained a part time job.

Well, I did catch up on bills, but my kids needed me more than we all thought (that story will have to be saved for another blog entry). I got a respiratory infection in January, but I was only slowed down for a couple of days and I went right back to driving the gravy train… until I fell. January 30, I fell and when I tried to catch myself, all I managed to do was dislocate my right elbow and break the head of the radius bone that is a part of that joint.

I have been off work ever since. I underwent surgery on March 25 and am currently in physical therapy.

This entire ‘vacation’ I have been unable to crochet, which is my way to de-stress. However, I have spent plenty of time with my children and I am so thankful for that opportunity.

Tomorrow I am going to pick up a hook and yarn again for the 1st time in a couple of months.

I will let you know how it goes in a couple of days 🙂

Thank you all for your continued prayers and good vibes.

Always…D

Jasper’s Chevron Blankie

Image

Let’s be honest… there are A LOT of Chevron patterns out there. I tried several of them, but became frustrated after I frogged all of them a few rows in. They were just not what I was looking for. I’m not a designer, but it isn’t the first time I have been left empty handed when searching for a pattern that fit the criteria of my new project. I sincerely hope that you find this pattern easy to follow. If you have any questions please leave me a message on my blog @ https://thehookingnook.wordpress.com
Tips: At the end of each row I have added the stitch count in parentheses. The method I used to change color in this pattern is pretty simple. Just finish off the end of the last row of one color, leaving about 4 inch tail to weave in. Start the next row with your new color, also leaving about 4 inch tail to weave in. You can weave in the tails as you go (which is what I prefer… by the time I get to the end of the project, I’m ready to edge it and be done without having to go back and weave in all the tails, but HEY if you like to leave them all then do whatever makes you feel good). I have included the number of rows I did of each color, but if you want to change it up, do it… if you want your stripes the same width or even if you don’t want stripes and want to rock it with just one color, then do it! It’s yours, honey!

Fire Shawl

Fire Shawl – available for purchase – message me.

A few years ago, I read The Hunger Games trilogy And immediately knew that I had to create something special…but I had to be patient.. I needed just the right yarn and just the right design. I found the yarn first 🙂 it definitely jumped right out at me screaming ‘fire!’ I found the right design, calculated what part of the yarn I needed to start with to get the color going how I wanted….and the result is what you see. I stowed it away (except for when these photos were taken) because I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. It doesn’t really get cold enough here in Louisiana for me to wear it and quite frankly I haven’t had the opportunity. It makes me sad because it really is gorgeous and should be worn, so I have decided if anyone is interested I am open to offers.

This Shawl is very light weight but very cozy and definitely holds the warmth in. It can be worn many different ways and would be a beautiful addition to any wardrobe.
